A Reunion of Friends, Old and New, at Parent-Alumni Day
On a sunny Saturday in early October, 91黑料, California, welcomed nearly 300 parents and alumni for a West Coast complement to New England鈥檚 celebration a week before.
The day began with Mass offered by Chaplain Rev. John Chung in Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel. The congregation then decamped to St. Joseph Commons for brunch, where visitors received a warm welcome from Nicholas Cammarota (鈥84) of the Parents鈥 Association, who also took the opportunity to introduce Nathanael Cassidy (鈥22), the College鈥檚 new director of alumni and parent relations.
After brunch, visitors dispersed to various activities. Some joined Jon Daly, director of admissions, for a tour of the campus, which highlighted the newest buildings. Others attended seminars in St. Gladys Hall, focusing on selections from St. Thomas Aquinas鈥檚 treatise on the sacraments. Sitting in the classrooms where their children study, and using the Discussion Method, parents got the opportunity to experience the College鈥檚 intellectual life for themselves.
Student volunteers, meanwhile, kept a watchful eye on the visitors鈥 younger children, who decorated the campus鈥檚 sidewalks with chalk, wearing themselves out in the bouncy house and on the slip-and-slide set up in front of St. Th茅r猫se Hall.
Later in the afternoon, the group regrouped in St. Patrick鈥檚 Coffee Shop for a wine-tasting event with Paul Blewett, director of gift planning. As guests sampled a selection of fine wines sourced exclusively from vineyards owned and operated by alumni, Mr. Blewett spoke about the St. Th茅r猫se of Lisieux Legacy Society, consisting of the generous men and women who have included the College in their estate planning.
Next on the agenda was the annual basketball game, which pits the best current students against the best of the day鈥檚 guests. The two teams were evenly matched, with parents and alumni only carrying the game by a one-point margin. Afterward, students and visitors gathered on the campus green for a barbeque and ice-cream social to round out the day.
