This morning students on the New England campus congregated in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel for the early Mass and to receive their Ash Wednesday ashes. Marked by a cross on their foreheads, Catholics wear the ashes to remember their mortality and to mourn for their sins as the Church enters the penitential season of Lent.

During his homily, Chaplain Rev. Carlos Viego stressed the importance of self-denial during the Lenten season. 鈥淧enance is self-denial of our bodies in order to discipline them in the service of God. We declare that He, alone, is God,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e put everything at His service. We will not be slaves to the desires of the flesh or of anything else.鈥
