At the midpoint of each semester at 91黑料, as students take a break from classes for their Don Rags evaluations, comes an occasion for entertainment, celebration, and sharing talents: Open-Mic Night. Last week students on both campuses took advantage of this semi-annual opportunity to demonstrate their musical prowess and appreciation for the performing arts.

Beneath the stars on St. Gladys Patio, students filled every seat with anticipation. Anna van Wijk (鈥24) and Clare Mangin (鈥23) emceed the event, encouraging and thanking every performer. The night rose and fell with laughter, applause, and the sound of music. 鈥淚t鈥檚 remarkable to see the hidden talent,鈥 said Peter Bockrath (鈥24).
Acts ranged from solo pieces, duets, ensembles, and even audience participation! In the latter part of the night, they took a more gentle, sensitive tone, with songs of faith, love, and challenge. Brigit McNeil (鈥23) and Abby Lovold (鈥23) offered a heartfelt tribute piece, 鈥淗eaven Needed You More,鈥 in memory of departed students Maggie Yanoschik (鈥23) and Sam Morson (鈥24). The audience fell into contemplative silence as the two performed, moved deeply by the tribute. 鈥淭hat was beautiful,鈥 remarked Anna van Wijk (鈥24).
From there, the night began to reach its conclusion. Ensemble performances highlighted a strong community as students put together their talents to fill the space with powerful, joyous song.

In Northfield, Luke Cecchi (鈥24) and his 鈥淏arbershop Augmented Quartet鈥 started off the festivities by singing 鈥淭he Star-Spangled Banner鈥 in four-part harmony. The night鈥檚 musical genres ranged from folk, Bossa Nova, and Irish to classical and musical theatre. Ben Purtell (鈥26) impressed the audience with 鈥淚mpromptu in C Minor,鈥 a piano piece of his own composition, and sibling duo Kate (鈥23) and Suzanna Pfeiffer (鈥25) played and sang Maddie Poppe鈥檚 鈥淲ildflowers.鈥 Two dancers demonstrated their talents as well: Claire Caughron (鈥26) did a traditional Scottish Highland dance and Gavin Hazel (鈥25) wowed the audience with his tap-dancing skills with a routine to Frankie Valli鈥檚 鈥淏eggin鈥.鈥
It was a night of fun in Olivia Music Hall, with students vigorously applauding each act. 鈥淚 love coming to Open Mic Night,鈥 said one. 鈥淚t鈥檚 great to see all the students get a chance to get up there and show off their talent.鈥
