On Sunday evening, students at 91����, New England, gathered in Our Mother of Perpetual Help Chapel for a Holy Hour featuring the first in a series of monthly vocation talks from Rev. John Chung.

Fr. Chung opened his talk with a question that every Christian must consider at some point in life: “Why did God create me?” Fortunately, the chaplain pointed out, our Catholic faith gives us a simple answer: to know, love, and serve Him, so that we may ultimately be joyfully united with Him forever in Heaven. “Because your life is a gift from God, it is ultimately meant to be a gift back to God,” he said. “That is where vocation begins.”

Having established this primary question, Fr. Chung then emphasized that, although each person’s individual vocation differs, the call to holiness is universal. Each person is called to follow Jesus Christ in His perfect example of what it means to be holy, as “Christ is the perfect revelation of what human life is meant to be.”

But as Christ’s life was not easy, so also our vocation is not what will make us most comfortable. Instead, it is what will make us follow Christ most faithfully and give ourselves to God in love. “The greatness of a vocation is not measured by how impressive it looks to the world; the greatness of vocation is measured by the love with which it is lived.”

Fr. Chung concluded by urging the students to be patient in their discernment. While they should not put off searching for their vocation for any reason — be it fear, worldly desire, or distraction — young people should also not rush for answers. Instead, they ought to open their hearts to God, allowing Him to guide them wherever He chooses. We need not know the path ahead, Fr. Chung observed. Instead, we need only pray: “Lord, what do You want me to do?” and be willing and eager to respond to His call.
