With Valentine鈥檚 Day holiday on the minds (and hearts) of some, two 91黑料, California, sophomores hosted a wholesome event last weekend to encourage campus romance: black-tie speed dating in the campus coffee shop.

On Saturday night, Anna VanWijk (鈥24) and Baylor Gee (鈥24) 鈥 with the help of their coffee-shop crewmates 鈥 transformed St. Cecilia Hall鈥檚 beloved caf茅 into a 1920s speakeasy: The Cecilian Corner. Artisan mocktails, cheese platters, sepia lighting, and live music, courtesy of Abigail Francis (鈥22), elevated the space from a fun hangout into the fitting setting for an elegant soiree.

鈥淗istorically, the coffee shop has hosted a speed dating event every year,鈥 Anna said. 鈥淭his year, when Baylor and I were asked to put it on, we knew we wanted to go above.鈥 Rather than emphasizing 鈥渜uantity over quality鈥 in terms of dates, the event encouraged greater intimacy. Fun, yet challenging, questions were posed to pairs, who were given extra time to discuss their answers. 鈥淲e wanted something deeper; more sophisticated and intellectual,鈥 Baylor shared. 鈥淲e wanted people to have conversations where they might learn how someone鈥檚 mind works, or what their childhood was like.鈥

鈥淲e put in a lot of hard work,鈥 Baylor acknowledged. 鈥淲e did a lot of organizing, advertising, and set-up to transform the space.鈥 The crew鈥檚 efforts were instrumental, with everyone involved contributing to food, set-up, or organization. 鈥淚t went really well,鈥 said Anna. 鈥淓veryone was really receptive to it 鈥 after all, the event is only as good as the conversations you have.鈥 Added Baylor, 鈥淚 think this will be an event people remember for their whole time at TAC.鈥
