Taking a Slower Pace
Students on the California High School Great Books Program rose this morning refreshed and happy after yesterday鈥檚 musical evening. With no morning class, programmers took a slower pace, making their way to St. Patrick鈥檚 Coffee Shop after Mass and breakfast in St. Joseph Commons.
The coffee shop was open for two hours, and students enjoyed refreshing iced matcha lattes and cold brew coffees prepared by the prefect team. Programmers chatted with each other and the prefects, played games, or read Boethius, the subject of this afternoon鈥檚 class. In preparation for tonight鈥檚 Chaplains on Tap, they wrote questions for Fr. Kelly and Fr. Sebastian, then placed them into the questions box.
At 10:00 am, swing-dance practice commenced, and prefect Max Alvarez led the students in reviewing some of the old moves they had learned last week, learning a few new ones, and putting them all together smoothly.
Once dance practice ended, many headed off to midmorning Mass, while others returned to the residence halls before a taco-salad lunch in the Commons. Then it was off to the classrooms for Books I-II of Boethius鈥檚 On the Consolation of Philosophy.
Boethius鈥檚 work covers many familiar themes which students have been discussing throughout the program: fate, good versus evil, and fortune. On the Consolation of Philosophy is set in prison, and the protagonist, loosely based on the author himself, is falling into despair at the injustice of the world and the tragedy of his circumstances. Lady Philosophy arrives in his prison cell and begins guiding him on the path to healing from his spiritual sickness, helping him answer some of his theological and philosophical questions and freeing him from despair. Students commented on the familiarity of the style, which is like that of a Socratic dialogue, likening it to last week鈥檚 discussions of Euthyphro.
Once classes were over, programmers raced to their residence halls to change for this afternoon and evening鈥檚 activities. On the agenda: an admissions meeting with Executive Director of Admissions Jon Daly and other members of the Admissions team, the famous Quad Run, and of course, Chaplains on Tap!
