After Wednesday evening’s proposition prep, many students on the California High School Great Books Program woke up early this morning to get in some extra review before it was time to return to the classrooms. The hard work paid off! They faced this morning’s challenge with ease, and those who presented the first props were proud of their well-executed demonstrations. They explained how to construct an equilateral triangle with circles, how to place a line equal to another given straight line at a given extremity, and how to cut off from two unequal straight lines a line equal to the lesser line.

“I really tried to just understand the argument,” shared Rachel W. “Knowing how it all goes together and what we’re trying to prove is much easier to me than memorizing every step.” 

Those who were not called on to present showered their sectionmates with words of praise, discovering a new sense of confidence in their own capabilities for tackling tomorrow’s set of demonstrations. With their first morning of propositions thus behind them, students either went to the midday Mass or relaxed in the sun before heading up to St. Joseph Commons for a lunch of turkey and bacon sandwiches, chips, and pasta salad.

Then it was off to the last class on Sacred Scripture: Genesis, chapters 12-25:12. Students considered the story of Abraham and his essential role in salvation history. They asked questions about his obedience to God, the meaning of the word “covenant,” and whether it was Abraham’s holiness that led God to choose him, or whether God's choosing made him holy.

As the programmers exited St. Gladys Hall at the end of their last class, the prefects greeted them and guided them over to St. Cecelia Hall. There, Max Alvarez (’26) and Rose Anderson (’26) led them in the day’s swing-dance practice.
