This morning marked the end of Euclid for students on the California High School Great Books Program, and programmers arose excited for one final morning of demonstrations. Numerous students attended the 7:15 a.m. Mass, and afterward, St. Joseph Commons was bustling with chitchat as people rehashed yesterday’s fun over a warm breakfast of eggs and potatoes. 

Students then met in St. Gladys Hall for their last class on geometry. Today’s demonstrations were Euclid’s Elements, Book 1, propositions , , and . These props build on the core theorems of the previous ones, relating lines and angles to triangle construction, and finally proving that the sum of the interior angles of a triangle is always 180°. 

“I really loved Euclid, I wish we could do it the whole program!” Levi D. shared. “I loved going up to the board to prove a prop and then showing how everything else followed.”

This final Euclid class was the programmers’ only class of the day, and once it ended, students enjoyed a nourishing lunch of orange chicken and steamed white rice. Then, it was off to Los Angeles to explore the Getty Center art museum and enjoy a beautiful concert at the Hollywood Bowl. This will be the last post on the Summer Program Blog for today, but tomorrow we will have all the details of today’s expedition to L.A.!
