With a long day of art and theology behind them, students on the New England High School Summer program awoke this morning with renewed academic vigor. Today is the second-to-last day of classes and the final day studying the Consolation of Philosophy. But first, this morning over breakfast, students ran through their Euclid props again before heading to the classroom building a little earlier than usual to study with the prefects.

By this time, half of the students in each section have demonstrated a proposition, and today and tomorrow, the remaining students will take their turns. This morning’s class was focused on equal angles and perpendicular lines, and programmers demonstrated how to construct straight lines at right angles and proving vertical angles equal. After each proposition, the sections asked questions prompted by the previous evening’s reflection and study, and the demonstration opened to conversation for the rest of the class.

Students next went to Mass or took a little downtime before lunch. Over cheeseburgers and French fries, prefects, programmers, and tutors talked about the morning’s demonstrations, Boethius, and Flannery O’Connor — the highly anticipated reading for tomorrow — and the students’ general experience at the College, so soon coming to an end. 

After lunch, students headed to their last class of the day, and their final class on Boethius. They pondered suffering and free will, discussing where true happiness lies, and why evil appears to prosper despite God’s justice.
