Wednesday morning on the New England High School Summer Program began the same as the rest, with early Mass and breakfast before class. After spending so much time preparing in study hall last night, students had lots of thoughts to share with their peers in anticipation of the upcoming class.

The Genesis class is among the most important and poignant of the Summer Program. The text is typically quite familiar to the students, but the conversations bring out so much more than one would realize on a first read. Summer Program Chaplain Rev. Moses (Luke ’14) Blain, O.Praem., encouraged the students beforehand, saying “Try to read these chapters on your own terms — not so much in the light of the revelation and salvation that you know is coming, but with no aid. Try to put yourself in the position of a wandering Jewish shepherd from that time. How would he respond to reading this, and what would stand out to him? What would he think?” 

In discussing Genesis’s accounts of Creation and the order therein, students had the opportunity yet again to relate past readings to the current one, getting an excellent taste of the College’s integrated curriculum. Having just read the pre-Socratics yesterday, which explored the oldest concepts of Creation and corruption, it was beautiful to compare the revealed Word of God to man’s own attempt to understand how things come to be. 

After this engaging class, students rushed off to a hearty lunch of homemade pizza before hastily changing into light and breezy clothes for an afternoon on the Connecticut River.
