On the last Saturday before Lent, students on both of 91黑料鈥檚 campuses enjoyed one last hurrah at New Orleans-themed Mardi Gras dances.
In California the Freshman Class hosted its first dance in a decoration-laden St. Cecilia Hall. Green and purple streamers hung about the dance floor with strung lights and balloons to contribute to the atmosphere. Off the dance floor, clusters of armchairs and sofas comprised lounge areas, where tables were loaded with plates of beignets and King Cakes. 鈥淚t was super exciting, and I had a lot of fun blending the themes 鈥 a 1920s speakeasy during a Mardi Gras celebration,鈥 said Katelyn Woods (鈥25), who oversaw the decorations. 鈥淪everal hours went into it with set-up, research, and shopping, and it turned out great!鈥
Kicking off the dance, the freshmen showed a short film to get energy and spirits high. Directed by Marcel Pryor (鈥25), the entertainment had the room roaring with laughter right up until the closing credits. Then the dancing began!
After some general dancing, the event shifted to a swing-dance competition. Couples took the floor and danced their hearts out to the delight of their peers. 鈥淚t was stunning, absolutely spectacular to watch,鈥 commented David Gerrard (鈥22). 鈥淚t was so fun competing,鈥 said Francesca Vercillo (鈥22) who took first place along with her partner, Max Nunes (鈥22). 鈥淚 love dancing, and I love that I鈥檓 able to do what I love here at TAC.鈥

In New England, the Junior Class spent all day Saturday preparing for the night鈥檚 fete, turning the Tracy Student Center into a replica Bourbon Street. The juniors鈥 hard work paid off as students gazed in awe at the hand-painted posters and hand-assembled balloon arch. 鈥淭he decorations and snacks were delicious,鈥 said sophomore Camden Tuffile.
Junior Benjamin Domnarksi opened the evening with a spectacular tap-dancing performance, eliciting loud cheers that filled the building. Then an ensemble of student musicians performed live jazz music that quickly filled the dance floor. 鈥淭here is something amazing about live music that you can鈥檛 get out of it being played through the speakers,鈥 remarked sophomore Anna Hinkle, a member of the ensemble.
The evening concluded with an enthralling and exciting waltz competition. The audience marveled as couples twirled and pranced in the center of the room. Junior Bridget Stoutz and freshman Stephen Brown scored first place after three rounds of competitive waltzing, outlasting over 30 couples. 鈥淚 loved the competition,鈥 said Stephen. And I鈥檓 so proud of everyone who competed.鈥
