An extreme summer-like heat graced the California campus last week, carried by the billowing Santa Ana winds; but that didn’t stop students from fostering the autumn spirit with an Oktoberfest!

At five o’clock sharp on Wednesday, the campus’s well-loved “Meat Club”, run by Luke Connelly (’27) and companions, served up a delicious dinner of bratwurst, pretzels, and pumpkin pie. Students picnicked on the lawn outside Sts. Peter and Paul Hall, chatting with friends and enjoying the early evening breeze after a hot day.

Plenty of post-dinner activities and competitions kept students excited and active, including a three-legged race, won by Joseph Emrich (’27) and Charlie Morson (’29), as well as a stein-holding competition, in which Christian Stypa (’27) emerged the winner.

Several students also tried their hand at the pumpkin-carving contest and were given a two-hour window to perfect their jack-o-lanterns until the judging began at seven o’clock. Spectators laughed at funny gourd faces and admired the artistic dexterity of their peers. At the end of the night, Catherine Rodriguez (’27) was named the pumpkin-carving victor for her beautiful and simple depiction of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
