The Banana Bread Lady chats with students over the brownies

Students returning to their residence halls after classes on February 8 took a detour past St. Joseph Commons to visit some old friends 鈥 and enjoy some final pre-Lenten treats! Barbara O鈥橣lynn, affectionately known at 91黑料 as 鈥渢he Banana Bread Lady,鈥 spent hours in the Dumb Ox Caf茅 with her husband, Patrick, conversing with students and distributing baked goods 鈥 a ritual that has punctuated semesters on the California campus for almost six years.

Members of the College鈥檚 President鈥檚 Council, the O鈥橣lynns began paying their semi-annual visits (with goodies) in 2017. As a younger man, Mr. O鈥橣lynn had read St. John Henry Newman鈥檚 The Idea of a University with approval: 鈥淚 said to myself, 鈥楾hat鈥檚 the proper form of education!鈥欌 When he learned that Newman鈥檚 writings had strongly influenced the College鈥檚 founding document, Mr. O鈥橣lynn decided he needed to see Newman鈥檚 famous idea in action.

The O鈥橣lynns got their wish. They visited several classes during that first visit and were delighted by the Discussion Method. 鈥淲hat I found most fascinating,鈥 reflects Mr. O鈥橣lynn, 鈥渋s that often a student who hadn鈥檛 said a word during the back and forth would suddenly say something that tied everything together perfectly, abstracting the meat of an idea from all the different positions 鈥 and then not say another word the rest of class!鈥

But if it was the College鈥檚 reputation that first attracted them, the O鈥橣lynns now return so regularly because of its students. 鈥淲hen we first came, they asked us, 鈥榃ho are you here to visit?鈥欌 recalls Mrs. O鈥橣lynn. 鈥淲e told them, 鈥榊ou!鈥 We鈥檙e not their aunts and uncles, not their parents or teachers; we have no children to send here. Our idea is just to tell the students how important we feel it is for them to get this education.鈥

They also bring treats. 鈥淯p to this time, she鈥檚 been known as 鈥榯he wife of the guy with the long white beard,鈥欌 laughs Mr. O鈥橣lynn. 鈥淏ut she became 鈥榯he Banana Bread Lady,鈥 and I became 鈥榯he husband of the Banana Bread Lady!鈥欌 All Mrs. O鈥橣lynn can do is smile. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a title that makes my heart swell!鈥

It is also well earned. Mrs. O鈥橣lynn bakes and freezes around 30 loaves of banana bread in anticipation of the couple鈥檚 fall visits. In the week before their most recent sojourn, she was merrily mired in batch after batch of brownies. The work is well worth it, however: No matter what she makes, there are never any leftovers.

The students, of course, look forward to more than just banana bread or brownies. 鈥淭he O鈥橣lynns鈥 visit is always a treat,鈥 says Michaela Lessard (鈥23). 鈥淭he fact that they have no ties to the College besides their love of our mission reminds us all how blessed we are to be here.鈥 The steady stream of students to the Dumb Ox Caf茅 last week eloquently echoed that sentiment. 鈥淲e truly love this place,鈥 says Mrs. O鈥橣lynn. For its part, the College looks forward to welcoming the Banana Bread Lady (and her husband) for many semesters to come.
