Finishing off this year’s welcome-dance season, the California Junior Class treated freshmen to a once-in-a-lifetime experience: a riotous Russian peasant dance.

The evening commenced in St. Cecilia Hall’s Frits B. Burns Auditorium, where the juniors presented their homemade entertainment: a comical short film about the last Russian royal family, portrayed by members of the Class of 2027.

With spirits raised, juniors and freshmen alike made their way to St. Joseph Commons, which had been transformed into a Russian Hall. Bistro lights, strung along the rafters, created a warm yet melancholic ambience, and solemn, imposing portraits of the “Royal Family” — as seen in the short film — hung around the space.

Attendees complemented the atmosphere with neutral outfits and dresses and the occasional flare of red. Some even came sporting ushankas, or Russian fur hats. To refuel throughout the night, students snacked on Russian cuisine staples: tea cakes and blini, or crepes.

“It is a spectacular dance,” remarked Athanasius Simms (‘29). “The decorations are on point and the music was well-chosen!”

Eventually, seniors and sophomores joined in the fun. Students waltzed, line danced, and swing danced, and — in a spontaneous display of skill — several students danced the Hopak, a difficult Russian dance. All in all, the night was a revolutionary success!
